Personal Assistance Centre Volunteer

Enjoy working with people? Have a heart for working with at-risk-of or persons experiencing homelessness? As a volunteer, you will build relationships with community members through an intake process, provide information regarding community resources, make referrals and assist guests as they choose clothing, toiletries, and household items that they need. All youths must be accompanied by an adult. Minimum age is 10. This opportunity takes place at the Mustard Seed in Edmonton.

Awesome Aquatics Assistant

Do you enjoy swimming and working with children? Assist participants in swimming lessons with mastering the skills by demonstrating the skill, supervising group activities and working one on one with some swimmers, all under the direction of the lead instructor. Also help with class set up and putting equipment away. You must complete a course for instructing, prior to starting to volunteer. Location is Fountain Park Pool.

Friendly Visitor

Serve as a friendly visitor for the clients at one of the care centres of a non-profit organization which aims to provide care and community services to the elderly and those with illnesses/disabilities. This is an ongoing, weekly position, where you will engage in activities with the resident as decided between you (e.g. reading, having coffee, etc). This opportunity takes place at Good Samaritan Society in Edmonton.

Recreation Assistant

Assist with different events at a non-profit organization which aims to provide care giving services to the elderly or those with illnesses or disabilities. The events include crafts or music, with some other special events. There are a variety of opportunities available. Shifts usually occur on Mondays or Tuesdays from 1:30 to 4:30 and this opportunity takes place at the Good Samaritan Society in Edmonton.

Special Events

This position involves short-term projects with the Special Events team of the Pilgrims Hospice Society, which may include the following: Summer Golf Charity, Fall Sunflower Luncheon, Voices For Hospice, Winter Share the Spirit, Spring Walk In My Shoes Fundraiser. The position might also involve some administration work such as light word processing, doing spreadsheets, setting up registrations, mailing invitations, and signage. This is an excellent, fun and social opportunity, while providing support to the organization’s programs. Flexible hours and commitment, depending on the nature of the event. Parents & Tots Assistant

This program has been designed to simulate parenting skills, with time split between parent/child interaction and an educational component. If you love working with children and learning about parenting then this program is for you. The program is part of the Military Family Resource Centre in Edmonton and runs from September to April/May.

Amplify Festival Activity Assistant

This will be a fun, but slightly more intensive commitment. You’ll have to come in in-advance of the Festival to learn the craft or activity you will be teaching others. Whether it’s jewelry-making, painting or anything in between, you’ll be in charge of helping festival-goers learn to do it themselves.

Amplify Festival Cafe/Concession Volunteer

Café/Concession volunteers will sell pop, chips and any other edibles we make available. From a chill acoustic vibe during the day to a loud rock concert vibe at night, this is a great way to experience the Festival, while helping out! Volunteers must be comfortable handling cash and encouraging festival-goers to donate.

Amplify Festival Coat Check Volunteer

Our coat check volunteers will check festival-attendees coats before they enter the concerts at night. This role is key to ensuring everything runs smoothly and a positive experience is had by all.

Amplify Festival Volunteer and Artist Hospitality

As an exceptionally enthusiastic volunteer, we need you to make sure the volunteers are happy! Basically, make sure the volunteer lounge is always clean and stocked with snacks and pop, as well as deliver special meals (gluten-free, vegetarian etc.) when needed.

Amplify Festival Workshop Room Assistant

Workshop Room Assistants will be the extra hands for their assigned workshop instructor. Helping with set-up, take-down, check-in and registering drop-in participants, the Workshop Room Assistants are there to make sure the workshops are running on time and the instructor has everything they need.

Horse Handler/Horse Side Walker

Assist riders with disabilities during an hour long class. As a horse handler, you’ll lead a horse while the rider participates in the class, letting the rider be as independent as possible while maintaining a safe distance from other horses and following the instructor’s requests. As a side walker, walk along side the horse and lend physical and/or emotional support to the rider during the lesson. Can also help in the barn, before and after class, grooming and tacking horses (but not required). There are two sessions throughout the year: fall and spring. Must attend mandatory orientation. Hours are flexible and volunteers can do as many 1 hour classes as they’d like. Organization is Little Bits Therapeutic Riding Association located at Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Riding Arena in Edmonton.

Eyeglasses Cleaner

Do you enjoy working with Seniors? This is a lovely opportunity to visit residents at the Edmonton Extendicare Eaux Claires Seniors facility and help them by cleaning their glasses. Of course, chatting with them and getting to know them is a very appreciated part of this volunteer position.

Friendly Visitor

Establish a one-on-one relationship with a resident who is in need of a friend and provide a meaningful social interaction to them. Some of our residents enjoy playing board games, cards, or reading with their visitor. This is a flexible position. This opportunity is at Extendicare Eaux Claire in Edmonton.

Mealtime Companion

Have a couple hours to spare? Promote a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere during mealtime for the residents by assisting during meal periods. This opportunity takes place at Capital Care Dickinsfield in Edmonton.

Child Care Volunteer

Do you like being around babies and kids? Assist professional staff with care and age appropriate play and activities for infants to children up to 10 years old. Next training session is August 31st. This opportunity takes place at Kids Kottage in Edmonton.

Unit Guiders

Are you a female who enjoys working with girls and youth? Become a leader and help young girls, ages 5–15, achieve greatness. Guiding has something for everyone! Junior leaders minimum age is 14 yrs and minimum age for leaders is 18 yrs. Meetings are Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, at various school & clubhouse locations in St. Albert. One meeting per week, plus planning and prep work, and one District meeting per month. Guiding year is August – April.

Donation Sorting Volunteer

Help our in-kind donations coordinator sort and organize donated items that come in daily. These items are sorted and the made available to all of our programs and services to help support adults and families in meeting their basic needs and more. Physio Therapy Support

Assist the physiotherapists department with a walking program for residents. The task includes helping to porter wheelchair behind the residents while they are walking. This opportunity takes place at the Youville Home in St. Albert.

Mobile Clinic Customer Care

Can you provide first rate customer service? You’ll help by offering refreshments to donors at the end of the donation process, thank donors for coming in to the clinic, being on alert for someone feeling light-headed; have them sit down and get help from nursing staff immediately, and if an individual re-bleeds, get a staff nurse immediately, under no circumstances would you attempt to mop/clean blood. Volunteer job is located in St. Albert. Flexible hours and commitment.

Music Therapist

Do you enjoy music and like sharing it with other people? Volunteers play their musical instruments to provide opportunities for motivational, supportive, and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life for the residents. You will encourage residents to join in by singing, clapping or tapping toes, ask residents if there are any songs they would like to hear. Some residents may not participate, but may still enjoy the music. This opportunity takes place at Extendicare Eaux Claire in Edmonton.

Safety Bear Mascot

Do you enjoy children and having fun in a crowd? Assist with the community policing unit by wearing a mascot uniform! Monty the Safety Bear does not speak but poses for pictures, gives out high fives and hugs. Position takes place at different event locations in St. Albert, and you will always be accompanied by an officer. Please note that, due to the length of the costume, maximum height is 5’9’’.

Clothesline Drop Box Champion

Be a champion for the Diabetes Drop Box Program and help to keep an eye on donation bins Edmonton. This can be done as you go about your daily activities. Simply drive or walk by the bins every day or two and report immediately if there is something that needs attention such as if bins needs to be emptied, if there are donations outside the bin because it is full, or if the bin has been defaced. There is no requirement to put donations in the bins or handle them.

Food Room

Help this organization assist those in need. Help staff collect donated food for the effective distribution to program participants with food insecurity. Receive and document food donations, sort, repackage, label & store foods, fill food orders, serve food and do other related duties as assigned. Child Care

The child care volunteer will be responsible for working with a team of child care professionals providing quality care to pre-school children (newborn – 5 yrs) with an emphasis on their social, physical, intellectual and creative development. Volunteer will be actively involved in play experiences, go outside to facilitate playground play, and accompany children on field trips and outings. As well, assist with the serving and cleanup of snacks & lunches. This opportunity takes place at the Bissell Centre in Edmonton.

Companion

A companion volunteer will play games (cards, board games, pool, shuffleboard etc.) with residents. You can also take our residents for walks and go for coffee or just sit and talk. This opportunity takes place at West Country Hearth in Sturgeon County.

Patient & Family Support on Medicine Nursing Units

To provide comfort and support to our inpatients on medicine units 15, 17, 18 & 19. Volunteers will provide fresh ice water, warm blankets, beverages and visitation to those patients who are receptive and able to have visitors during their stay at the hospital. Training and orientation is a buddy/training course with another volunteer on the units. The assignment description will be provided to the volunteer at time of interview. This opportunity takes place at Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert.

Patient & Family Support on Surgery Nursing Units

Pet Therapy – Dog

Do you have a dog that is well behaved and enjoys being around people? You and your dog will visit residents weekly which will give them the chance for motivational, supportive, and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance their quality of life. While visiting you will keep your dog on a leash, as well as ensure you pet is physically and mentally sound and vaccinations are current. Usher / House Manager

Lunch With Bunch

Do you like to plan and cook meals for larger groups? Help the St. Albert Salvation Army with preparing a meal every Tuesday for 25 people. Your responsibilities include meal planning, shopping for groceries, cooking the meal, and clean up. Time commitment is approximately 10:00am – 1:00pm every Tuesday for the meal and then shopping for the groceries at your convenience.

Mealtime Companion

Soccer Coach

Youth team coaches wanted for programs in U4 – U18 Community leagues. Outdoor season runs mid-April to end of June, and indoor season runs end of October to end of February; coach outdoor or indoor or both. You can coach 4 year-olds where your main role is to coach and encourage the beginners in the game, or other age groups right through to the older teens. Games happen in St. Albert, with older teams also playing in Edmonton & area.

Afternoon Tea Assistant

To serve afternoon tea and provide a social gathering for patients, families and friends on a weekly basis. Duties will include setting up, preparation of the lounge, making and serving tea/juice, circulation around the unit to invite patients and families to tea, greeting, conversing with patients and visitors, and clean up. Leisure Companion

Looking for volunteers to visit Brain Care Centre clients in the community or accompany them on outings, while providing companionship, support and friendship. Activities could include shopping, going for walks, reading, running errands, etc. The volunteer plays a fundamental role in contributing to the participant’s cognitive and social development. This opportunity may take place in St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, and Edmonton.

In-Community Volunteer

Are you comfortable approaching people and have good public speaking skills? Support Canadian Blood Services initiatives by participating in local events and promote community awareness regarding the importance of blood donations. Assist with set-up and tear down of promotional booths and other equipment, provide courteous and responsive service to prospect donors, provide information on programs and initiatives, assist with the management of participant records and event documentation. Theater Usher

Answering patrons questions, directing patrons to patrons’ washrooms, collect ticket stubs, hand out programs, helping Bartender as people file into theatre. Adult Day Program Helper

To assist with program activities and to provide support and companionship to clients participating in the day program. Receptionist Volunteer

Assist with daily administrative duties while directing participants, donors, and volunteers to the appropriate service areas/departments. Also help with the coordination of donated (in-kind) items. The volunteer should be comfortable working with people who may be intoxicated or have substance abuse issues. Should be comfortable being among inner city members who have a variety of needs. Book Cart Volunteer

Help patients continue the joy of reading by providing books and magazines for their reading pleasure. You will take a fully stocked mobile book cart to patients and “do rounds” as per assignment. This opportunity to read during their hospitalization will improve their experience and quality of care. Training and orientation will be provided. A six month commitment is requested. Yoga Mentor

We are looking for volunteers to spend time assisting our members with yoga related positions and movements, and help with basic set up of mats and chairs. A certified yoga instructor is present at every class and is available to all of the volunteers for assistance and direction.
