Who Needs Volunteers?
April 8, 2010
St. Albert Community Information and Volunteer Centre assists 185 St. Albert and Edmonton agencies to recruit volunteers.
Of those, 80–90 per cent are recruited for Human Services agencies.
CIVC’s staff matches volunteers with the agency that most needs their special and unique services. Some volunteers wish to make an ongoing contribution, perhaps by coaching youths on a baseball team, or by visiting a lonely shut-in, or by helping a new Canadian citizen learn to read English. Others prefer to offer a one-time commitment by volunteering at a big, exciting event such as the St. Albert Children’s Festival, at the 55-Plus Alberta Winter Games or at a Special Olympics event.
In St. Albert alone there are numerous opportunities and ways to give back to your community. Just a few of the agencies that CIVC regularly recruits volunteers for include: the St. Albert Food Bank, St. Albert Victim Services, the St. Albert Youth Community Centre and the Arden Theatre. As a volunteer you might train a puppy for months to help the “Dogs With Wings” program; take your dog in to visit a sick child through the Pet Therapy Society; or perhaps you might choose to simply roll up your sleeves once a week and do some weeding down at the St. Albert Botanic Park.
